Sodium acetate is an organic sodium salt containing acetate. It is a hygroscopic powder and highly soluble in water. It can be used as an additive in food, in industry, concrete production, heating pads and buffer solutions. When dissolved in water, it forms sodium ions (Na+) and acetate ions.
Sodium acetate may be mildly irritating to the eyes and skin. When it decomposes on heating or comes into contact with a strong acid, acetic acid vapours may form.
