What is Acetone?
Acetone is an organic solvent that is often used to remove oil and grease stains from clothing and materials. The substance is also known as propanone, dimethyl ketone or 2-propanone. It is a clear, colorless liquid with a strong characteristic odor that is used in both domestic and industrial applications. Chemically, it is the simplest compound containing a ketone group.
Properties and uses of Acetone
Acetone is a volatile, highly flammable substance with a low boiling point of 56.08 °C and a melting point of −94.9 °C. It is also easily miscible with water and other solvents such as benzene, diethyl ether , methanol , chloroform and ethanol . It is often found in products such as nail polish removers, adhesive removers and paint thinners. In some cases it is used in laboratories to dry glassware after washing, thereby helping to remove residual water. Acetone evaporates quickly leaving a clean and dry surface.
The acetone bottles we sell have a child-safe closure that can be opened by pressing the cap and turning it open. The product can then be applied to a cloth and used to remove stains. It is advised not to use it on plastic, rayon and chlorine fibers.
