What is Boiled Linseed Oil?

Boiled linseed oil is a form of linseed oil that is extracted from the seeds of the flax plant. It is a natural product with a light yellow color that is often used in paints, varnishes and as a wood preservative.

The “cooking” treatment of this linseed oil does not mean that the oil is actually boiled. In reality, it refers to the heating process in which siccatives (drying agents) are added to accelerate the oxidation and polymerization of the oil. This process significantly improves the drying time of the product compared to raw linseed oil.

Boiled linseed oil is for this reason a popular finishing agent for woodwork, both indoors and outdoors. You can use it on all kinds of wooden objects, such as: ladders, fences, beams, doors and cupboards.

This product provides a durable, glossy finish that is water-repellent and protects your wood from the elements.

Instructions

Preparation:

  1. Make sure that the surface to be treated is clean, dry and free of dust, grease and old paint layers. For new wood, sand lightly for better adhesion.
  2. Work in a well-ventilated area and wear protective gloves if necessary.

Application:

  1. Stir the boiled linseed oil well before starting to ensure a uniform consistency.
  2. Apply a thin layer with a clean, dry brush or cloth. For even coverage, work in the direction of the wood grain.
  3. Let the oil dry for at least 24 hours ; depending on the ambient temperature and humidity, this may take longer.
  4. After the first coat, lightly sand with fine sandpaper for a smooth finish. Remove all sanding dust before applying the next coat.
  5. For extra protection and depth to the finish, apply several thin coats , allowing each coat to dry completely before applying the next. Two to three coats are usually sufficient.

Aftercare and Maintenance:

  1. Keep treated surfaces clean by wiping them with a slightly damp cloth.
  2. Annual maintenance may be required for surfaces exposed to severe weather conditions or wear and tear, by applying a new coat of linseed oil.
